Nalany Richardson

Nalany is a master’s student in the Comparative Biomedical Sciences Department with the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia, studying mosquito-bird interactions as they pertain to sensory ecology. Her alma mater is the University of South Carolina Aiken, where she obtained a B.Sc degree in Biology and minor in Psychology, with a cognate in Physics and Organic Chemistry.

Prior research in: 1) conservation genomics testing candidate genes linked to spawning color variation in sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka)  to determine their function in color expression in tributary-spawning populations, 2) Emotional Regulation and Psychological Need, and 3) assessing chromosome-scale bioinformatics data in Sabal palmetto.

Her research interests are in how mosquito transmission dynamics influence both human and bird populations, public health outreach and intervention, bioinformatics. When she’s not in the field, she can be found hiking around the Blue Ridge and Carolinas, crocheting, or taking her Shih tzus on late night rides.

Mary Beard

Mary Beth is a Ph.D. student in the Comparative Biomedical Science program at the University of Georgia. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of South Carolina Aiken with a focus on environmental remediation and restoration and cognates in organic chemistry and geology. Her current research in the Peach lab investigates interactions between invasive wild pigs and disease vectors, as well as the potential impacts of their ecological synergism on wildlife health, human health, and human activities. 

Her broader research interests include entomology, vector and invasive species ecology, traditional ecology, wildlife biology, conservation biology, mycology, and environmental science. Outside of the lab and fieldwork, Mary Beth enjoys volunteering with local conservation organizations on wildlife surveys and public educational hikes. Her hobbies include biological illustration, gouache painting, pyrography, banjo-picking, and spending time with her spouse and her cats Moss and Lichen.
